ROFL For A Reason at Naked Fish, Saipan

Ed Propst reading out the list of “don’ts” his wife wrote for him before coming on stage to introduce our first comedian.  At the top of the list, “Don’t discuss our sex life.”  Wonder if Daisy saw his last FB status. Hmmm…Ed?

Jay Sanchez had his own list of things no to do when you move off island.  My favorite was “Don’t ask people who their parents are.”  You have to be Chamorro to understand the significance of that question.

It was a sold out crowd.  The entire ticket sales went to the CNMI Autism Society to help raise awareness of autism.  Butch Sigua, owner of Naked Fish Saipan also donated 20% of all sales to the ASCNMI.  Sponsors for this event include: Mar Pac, Naked Fish, Bison Relations and the ASCNMI.  Supporters who helped promote the event include: KKMP Radio and KSPN News.

Chamorros are fun loving and funny people.  My favorite memories of growing up were listening to my family go on and on teasing one another and laughing.  It was a special treat to have local talent share the sometimes absurd, most of the time hilarious things we do.

Sharlene Crisostimo, or Mama Shar as she is affectionately called by her students, shared some of her other titles: Queen Of the World and my favorite, OGO (Oh Great One).

The night ended fabulously with the beautiful and funny Mona Concepcion who was back in the islands after 9 years of living in Seattle.  I’m still laughing at Mona‘s depiction of her mother speaking Spanish to strangers in Seattle to demonstrate the similarities between our languages.  “Slow down, Rosetta Stone!”

We totally have to do this again, CNMI!

I bet Mona had all these great vacation plans.  I bet she was gonna do her rounds “amening” all the man amko, drink Bud Light while eating barbecue ribs and order her Pan Tuba at Herman’s Bakery. You know, vacationy stuff.

I bet she was, until somebody had to be all, “Mona, Mona, Mona…I got a great idea!” Somebody wouldn’t shut up her “Mona, Mona, Mona, wanna do a show huh? Wanna? Wanna? Wanna?”  So now, instead of shopping for bathing suits for her hot mama bod (which I hate by the way), she’s slumped over her dining room table scribbling jokes about Vick’s and chenchule’, wondering if an airplane full of people traveling over thousands of miles of ocean is a captive enough audience to practice on.  You could always ask the flight attendant to borrow you her microphone, you know.  Mona, I’m sorry.  Let me make it up to you by buying you a margarita.  In Saipan, a “one margarita” is really four or five glasses, so I gots you, girl!

Mona, one day you will thank me for this. *COUGH*bathandbodyworks*COUGH!!

Saipan Peeps: If you want to come ruin Mona’s vacation with me, we’ll be at Naked Fish on March 30th at 6:30 pm.  We sorta messed up Shar Crisostimo and Jay Sanchez’s weekends too, because now they have to open for Mona after a long day of learning their own students.  Oh shoots, does this mean I have to share my margaritas with them?

How to get the Coconut Underground (A.K.A. Chamorro Rumor Mill) started: whisper something to yourself.

Self: Mona is coming to Saipan and she’s going to perform comedy at Naked Fish on March 30th at 6:30 pm.

Coconut Underground: Vrrrooooooom!!!

Okay, so that was a joke and it’s pretty apparent that I am not funny, but Mona Concepcion is and she will be on Saipan on March 30th for a night of comedy at the Naked Fish Bar & Grill!!  All the proceeds from the $10 cover charge will go to the Autism Society.  I originally intended it to go to my Save the Mommy Fund, but that’s pretty difficult to pitch.  That, and I don’t know who in their right mind would pay to expand my bathroom to include a jacuzzi.  Autism is no laughing matter, and awareness efforts can never be vigorous enough, but for one night we can share an evening laughing for a good cause.  Won’t you join us?

By the way, did I tell you how awesome Naked Fish is? Totally awesome!! In addition to opening up their doors and providing live music for the evening, they will be donating 20% of all profit that night to the Autism Society!!  Even though it sounds like the contribution of funds is the best part, let me assure you it’s not.  The hearts of the people involved in this are the most wonderful part about it and why I feel completely blessed to live in a multi-cultural, interdependent, extended, blended and caring community.  Thank you Naked Fish!!!  Thank you Butch Sigua!!!

Mother, Marathon Runner, Mommy Blogger, Mean Comedienne, Mona

Who is Mona? SHUT UP!! Mona is the only Chamorro FEMALE COMEDIENNE in EXISTENCE.  This is probably due to the minimal representation of Chamorros in demographics worldwide, but it’s TRUE!  She’s the only ONE folks and she’s FUNNY.  She’s make-fun-of-your-Sears-loving-family funny.  She’s pick-on-your-husband funny.  She’s the only comedy act in the Seattle area that uses the word bebe without proper capitalization and the audience doesn’t have a clue what she’s talking about.  BUT WE DO!!  So, mark the date in the sand and set your sundials for a night of laughter.  Yes, I realize that sundials can’t be set for 6:30 pm.  I’m super psyched because Mona’s coming (and because I got to use lots of capital letters in this post).
